In the middle of the night, just six months before he is set to be released, Leone, a model prisoner, is abruptly dragged from his bed in a minimum-security prison and transferred to Gateway, a maximum-security facility run by the ruthless Warden Drumgoole. This move is orchestrated by Drumgoole, who has pulled every string he can to have Leone placed under his control, where he aims to keep him for the rest of his life.

Previously, Leone had been one of Drumgoole's "charges" at another correctional facility until he managed to escape in order to be at his foster father's deathbed. Drumgoole's harsh treatment, which forced Leone to break out just two weeks shy of his release, prompted a newspaper report that accused the warden of brutality. As a result, Leone was sentenced to additional time, while Drumgoole was publicly humiliated and transferred to Gateway, the worst prison in the system. Now, Drumgoole is seeking his revenge.

Drumgoole's plan is to physically and psychologically intimidate Leone until he finally lashes out. When that happens, Drumgoole will extend his prison sentence indefinitely, trapping him in "hell" for the rest of his days. The warden is determined to break Leone's spirit and ensure that he never leaves the confines of Gateway.

Trapped in this maximum-security hellhole, Leone must confront the relentless cruelty of Drumgoole and his corrupt regime. The warden's campaign of terror includes physical abuse, psychological torment, and the manipulation of the prison system to keep his nemesis under his thumb. Leone, once a model prisoner, finds himself in a desperate struggle for survival against a sadistic and vindictive adversary who will stop at nothing to exact his revenge.

As the tension builds and the stakes continue to rise, Leone must find the strength and resilience to endure Drumgoole's onslaught and, ultimately, devise a way to escape the warden's grip. The fate of Leone's future, and perhaps his very life, hangs in the balance as he confronts the unforgiving realities of the prison system and the relentless pursuit of a man consumed by his own twisted sense of justice.
