In a maximum-security prison called Gateway, which is run by the ruthless Warden Drumgoole, model prisoner Leone is forcibly transferred from his minimum-security facility just six months before his scheduled release. Drumgoole, who had previously been in charge of Leone at another facility, has gone to great lengths to have Leone placed under his control at Gateway, where he intends to keep him for the rest of his life.

Leone's escape from Drumgoole's previous facility, to be at his foster father's deathbed, had prompted a newspaper report accusing the warden of brutality. As a result, Drumgoole was publicly humiliated and transferred to Gateway, the worst prison in the system. Now, Drumgoole is seeking his revenge on Leone.
